
Two women travelling southbound in a mercedes died and one person was injured just after11:30am. A lorry careered from the northbound carriageway and through the centra lreservation and hit the car travelling south.
Emergency Services, including the Air Ambulance were at the scene near Frankley Services.
A West Midlands ambulance spokesman said the driver and passenger in the Mercedes car died atthe scene of the crash. The driver of the lorry was released from his cabbefore being treated for arm and neck injuries.
The driver was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being taken to Worcester Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
It is believed that a blown tyre may have caused the HGV to swerve across the motorway andcollide with the Mercedes travelling in the opposite direction.
The motorway was closed for more than seven hours, leaving thousands of motorists queing behindthe crash, experiencing delays of up to 90 minutes.
Motorists were asked to avoid the area where possible and both carriageways remained closedtill just after 6pm.
One lane remained closed in both directions, as motorway maintenance crews made emergency repairsto the central reservation crash barriers.
The accident also affected the M42,M40, and M6 along with many local routes as drivers weretrying to find alternative routes.
