    The Stoneridge Digital Tachograph

    The Stoneridge Digital Tachograph

The Stoneridge tachograph is a great deal less common than the Continental Automotive tachograph. The Stoneridge unit can mainly be found in Scania vehicles. Although the Stoneridge and Continental Automotive units are fairly similar there are a few key differences.
    1. Instead of inserting your driver’s card into a slot on the front of the Stoneridge unit you must eject a drawer, place your card in the drawer, and push the drawer back into place.
    2. Due to the set up of the Stoneridge unit’s printer it is far more complicated to change the printer roll in this unit.
    3. The downloading process is also far more complicated, the Continental Automotive unit has a connector on the front of the unit for downloading. The Stoneridge unit has a connector tucked behind the printer, so the unit must be slightly disassembled in order for data to be downloaded.

    How to Make Manual Entries

Manual entries can be made on this device to account for work that has not been recorded on the VU or driver’s card. Entries can only be added when a driver first inserts his card. On this device a driver can only make 16 manual entries in a 24 hour time period.

    Manual Entries Step-By-Step
    1. Insert Driver’s Card
    2. If you would like to make an addition to your current work day use the Up and Down buttons to make sure that a tick (check mark) is highlighted in the display, then press Ok/Enter.
    3. If you would like to make an addition to a previous work day use the Up and Down buttons to make sure that a cross (X) is highlighted in the display, then press Ok/Enter.
    4. Use the Up and Down buttons to select the date(s) and time(s) of the additions you are making, press Ok/Enter when finished.
    5. You may then start your work day.
    How to Make Printouts

It is necessary for all drivers to know how to take a printout from their VU. As discussed earlier if your card is missing or damaged to the point of being unusable you are required to take daily printouts from your VU. If you fail to take these printouts you and your employer can be prosecuted.

    Step-By-Step Printout Guide
    1. Press the Ok/Enter button to be taken to the main menu.
    2. Use the Up and Down buttons to find the print menu, press Ok/Enter when you locate the print menu.
    3. Use the Up and Down buttons to find the appropriate printout, and press Ok/Enter to begin the printing process.
How to Change the Print Roll

It can be somewhat complicated to change the print roll in a Stoneridge VU. Keep in mind that the VU has a paper cassette that must be removed before a new print roll can be inserted.

    Step-By-Step Print Roll Changing Guide
    1. Press the upper edge of the printer cover (area circled in red in picture below)
    2. Remove cassette by pulling gently on the lower edge of the panel.
    3. Insert the paper into the top of the cassette.
    4. Feed the free end of the paper around the rear of the cassette
    5. Then feed the paper over the roller.
    6. Then under the cassette mechanism (toward the front of the panel)
    7. Gently slide the cassette back onto the rails and push back into VU

Is this type of digi tacho going to be standard in all new vehicles. I am an agency driver and have not used one yet, but other drivers have have used this type of tacho. They advised that they have done a manual entry and then got an infringment at the end of their shift because their rest period showed as on duty. Is there a manual any where that can be down loaded on the basic input of new tachos?

    Hi JHC,

Welcome to the site, there are 3 types of Digital Tachographs in use within the UK at this moment in time.

We have listed the two most common types, and have also done a basic user guide, which can be found here Digital Tachograph - Basic User Guide.

This guide was made to let users printout and take with them wherever they maybe, all we ask is that you keep the original Logo etc on the printout, to enable other people/drivers who see this guide be able to find this site for free advice etc.

I dont understand a reason why drivers have done a manual entry for a rest period, unless they have forgotten to switch the digital tachograph over to rest mode, they would automatically get a tachograph infringment as the tachograph would show that they have had insufficient rest, most of these infringments are computer generated, and the person/company who would oversee that drivers are complying with the Tachograph Rules and Regulations, would normally indicate on the generated report that a manual entry had been noted detailing the reason for departure from the regulations.

Sometimes the person who does the reports wouldn't get this printout of the manual entry till after 28 days when you hand in your printout with the declaration. A way around this would be to do the printout and then photocopy it, and hand it in immediately, keeping the original with you for the required 28 days, in case you need to produce it to VOSA. This would allow the person who looks after the analysis of your tachographs the oppurtunity to see the manual entry before producing any infringment reports.

There is a new Digital Tachograph Unit coming soon, which is meant to help with roll over of minutes, when you stop, as you can lose minutes when you are in stop and start traffic, we will be publishing details of this Unit when we have further details.

    Hi Julian,

First of all welcome to site.

Are you looking for a electric schematic of a digital tachograph unit, and if so which unit are you needing the schematic for?

    Hi Julian,

I have today contacted a press officer contact at VDO, to attempt to get you some study material.

I do however have in my posession basic datasheets relating to digital tachographs, a basic flowchart of how and where the information comes, and datasheets relating to speed sensors etc.

If this is of any use, please let me know that its okay for me to send these to the email address you registered your account here with.
